"Together Building the Kingdom of God"

February 27 & 28, 2010

WELCOME TO ST. PAUL'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH

WELCOME. In the name of Christ, we offer you welcome to this church. May those who sorrow find comfort; the weary, rest; the troubled, peace; the stranger, friends; the unhappy, joy; and to all, the sense of God’s presence in this Holy Place. If you are new to this parish community, please give your name and phone number to the Rector or sign our guest register on the stand in the back of the Church. As our honored guest, we want to welcome you.

THE SERVICE. There are two main books used for our service; the smaller red book is the Book of Common Prayer and the larger blue book is the Hymnal. There is also a Gray Hymnal. They can be found in the bookrack on the back of the pew in front of you. A Bible can be found at the ends of the pew. The page / hymn numbers in the service bulletin help you find your place in these service books. We invite you to participate fully in our worship.

RECEIVING COMMUNION. Holy Communion in the Episcopal Church is open to all who are comfortable participating in the Communion of the Lord’s Table. To receive communion come to the altar rail; kneel or stand with one hand cupped on top of the other hand to receive the consecrated bread. Please take the chalice and drink from it; or you may intinct the bread by dipping it in the consecrated wine. Parents are encouraged to determine when a child is ready to receive communion. All children are invited to the altar rail to receive communion or a blessing. Please feel comfortable doing what is best for you and your child.

Vestry Representation Today:   8:00 a.m. – Les Graham       10:15 a.m. – Peter Ollar

Food Donations:  You are reminded to bring your food items to church each week so that on the last Sunday of the month we can present them to the Lord for blessing and then give them to our food bank.  Whenever you go shopping, please add extra non-perishable items to your order for this parish outreach ministry.  Jesus never forgot the last, the lost and the least in his ministry and neither can we.

Gas Money:  Don’t forget to put your spare change (or more) in the “Gas Money” donation box in the back of the church.  All money donated goes directly to our Companion Parish in Brazil – Holy Martyrs – to help pay for gas for the jeep that Pastor Ismael Hurtado drives each week to five (5) locations to celebrate with his people.  Let’s help Pastor Hurtado evangelize his people.

Free Community Breakfast:  In order to help coordinate the generous donations to our monthly free community breakfast, there is a sign-up sheet in the parish hall on which you can indicate what items you will donate.  This way we will know what needs to be bought.

The Altar Flowers are available for the weeks of March 21; April 11, 18, 25. The Sanctuary Candles are available for the weeks of March 28; April 4, 11, 18, 25.

Mission and Ministry Plan:  One of the goals of our Mission and Ministry Plan is to increase the average Sunday attendance to 155 by the end of 2010.  That gives us less than a year.  While the Outreach Ministry Committee and the Vestry are working on ways to do this, the one way that has proven the most effective is a personal invitation by a current member to someone else.  A former member, an inactive family member, someone who is searching for a church, someone who has expressed dissatisfaction with their current church – all are people who would welcome a personal invitation from you to come and pray with us at Saint Paul’s.  We need everyone to commit to reaching out and bringing in at least two new active members.  We have been commissioned by Jesus Christ himself to do this.  Let’s just do it!

Live in Concert:  The Biava String Quartet will perform at Elizabethtown High School on Thursday, March 11, at 7:00 p.m.  Tom Hartman’s son Austin is a member of this quartet.  A free-will offering will be accepted following the concert.  Please put this date on your calendar.

Lenten Prayer Banner:  There is a Lenten Prayer Banner in the church by the side altar.  On the side altar will be Prayer Crosses with attachment pins.  Take a Prayer Cross, write your prayer, need, thanksgiving, remembrance, repentance, etc. on the cross and attach it to the Prayer Banner.  This way all our prayers as the Body of Christ will come together during Lent so they can be transformed on Easter.

Lenten Program:  In unity with Hope Church (Mt. Hope), Saint Paul Church (Manheim), Saint Luke Church (Mt. Joy) and Saint Paul Church (Columbia) there will be a joint Lenten Education / Reflection Program.  The program will be held on Wednesdays during Lent.

March 3 (Saint Luke) “Healing Through Service to Others”

March 10 (St. Paul, Columbia) “Healing Through Scripture”

March 24 (Saint Paul, Manheim) “Healing Through Prayer”

We begin at 6:00 p.m. with a light dinner and the program begins at approximately 7:00 p.m.  We close the evening with Compline and end the evening at about 8:00 p.m.  If you like to car-pool, please let Father Patrick know so he can make arrangements.

Let’s be careful; but not panic:  With the threat of both the seasonal flu, as well as the H1N1 flu, let’s be careful.  There is hand sanitizer on the bookcase in the back of the church that is there for anyone to use before and / or after the service.  Fr. Patrick, the Acolytes, and the Eucharistic Ministers are using hand sanitizer before the start of the service and Father Patrick is using it again during the Washing of the Hands.  In addition, our Altar Guild is using it before they set the altar.  If you feel uncomfortable with shaking hands at the Sign of Peace, just indicate this to others and just offer a verbal Sign of Peace.  At communion, we will continue to offer the chalice and you are free to make whatever decision you wish about taking the wine.  You can refrain (since full communion is received in the bread), you can intinct (please make sure your fingers do not touch the wine), or you may drink from the chalice (it is wiped after each person).

With some common sense and a lack of panic, we will get through this flu season.  You are urged to check with your doctor about getting the seasonal flu shot and the H1N1 flu shot as both become available.  If you get sick – SEE YOUR DOCTOR RIGHT AWAY – DON’T WAIT!

Church and Parish Hall Keys:  We have finished the renovation to our parish hall this month which included the replacement of at least one door that has a lock on it, we will need to re-key all the doors of the church and parish hall.  A number of those who have keys have lost them and in the interest of security this change makes sense.  Also, we have discovered that someone had  keys made without our knowledge and this too, makes it a security issue.  Currently we have over 30 keys outstanding.  We will update you when we get closer to the date so this change will go as smoothly as possible.  One of our goals is to reduce the number of keys outstanding so we ask your understanding as we go about this change.

Please Help:  With all the snow this winter, attendance has been understandably low.  We ask your help – please make up your donation for missed days (pledge and/or loose) as soon as possible.  Your help with this is deeply appreciated.  Thank you!

Stations Of The Cross:  Stations of the Cross will be held each Friday during Lent continuing on Friday, March 5 at 6:30 p.m.  As we have for the last three years we will join once again with our brothers and sisters from Saint Peter Roman Catholic Church two times to pray these Stations together (one Friday at Saint Peter’s – Friday, March 12 and another Friday here at Saint Paul’s – Friday, March 19).  Please note that the joint stations with St. Peter’s will be at 7:00 p.m. The Stations of the Cross is a wonderful service that helps us walk with Jesus the painful way of His cross that he walked for us.  It also reminds us of just how much we are loved by our God.  Come and pray!  This is a great service to bring a guest – just a simple song and prayer.  “Could you not spend just one hour with me in prayer?”

Youth Group/All Parish Event:  Our Second Annual Swim Party will be held today Sunday, February 28 at 4:00 p.m. at the Hempfield Recreation Center on

Saint Patrick’s Day Celebration:  On Sunday, March 14 we will celebrate the Patronal Feast of the Rector.  We will have one service on Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m.  It will be a “grand celebration.”  Come and bring your friends to honor the Apostle to the Irish.  Patrick, like Paul was an evangelizer who spread the Good News of Jesus Christ to new peoples.  Following the service, Father Patrick is treating everyone to lunch in the parish hall.  This luncheon will also serve as an occasion to dedicate our newly renovated parish hall.  This day will be a time of celebration of faith – faith in Jesus Christ and the faith that we have in our mission and ministry together in this place.  Please note:  We will have our Saturday evening service in the Chapel of the Saint John Herr Estates as normally scheduled.

Sympathy:  Our deepest sympathy to Alf Kuhns on the death of his twin brother Vincent.  Please keep Alf and his family in your prayers.

“Joseph” (Sight and Sound):  Experience this thrilling, life-changing adventure as Joseph’s epic story of integrity and forgiveness takes flight on the Millennium Theatre stage!  This all new, original Sight and Sound production is as colorful and captivating as Joseph’s famous coat.  From the tents of Canaan to the stunning palaces of Egypt, Joseph will inspire all to dream and live for the glory of God.  St. Paul’s is planning a trip to Sight and Sound sometime this summer.  The cost per person is $45.00 for adults; $20.00 for teens; and $10.00 for children ages 3 to 12.  Please let us know if you are interested in going.

Stony Battery Road.  There is no cost for this event and the parish will provide the drinks if everyone will bring some snacks and edibles to share.  This is like a parish picnic in the winter.  Even if you don’t swim, just come and have fun.  If you need a ride, please call the parish office at 684-8496 and we will hook you up with a ride.  Our Youth Minister and the Youth Group really want to make their activities full parish activities so that all members, no matter their age, can come together and have some fun.  Please support the youth group in their goal.
