"Together Building the Kingdom of God"

SEPTEMBER 4 & 5, 2010

WELCOME TO ST. PAUL'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH

WELCOME. In the name of Christ, we offer you welcome to this church. May those who sorrow find comfort; the weary, rest; the troubled, peace; the stranger, friends; the unhappy, joy; and to all, the sense of God’s presence in this Holy Place. If you are new to this parish community, please give your name and phone number to the Rector or sign our guest register on the stand in the back of the Church. As our honored guest, we want to welcome you.

THE SERVICE. There are two main books used for our service; the smaller red book is the Book of Common Prayer and the larger blue book is the Hymnal. There is also a Gray Hymnal. They can be found in the bookrack on the back of the pew in front of you. A Bible can be found at the ends of the pew. The page / hymn numbers in the service bulletin help you find your place in these service books. We invite you to participate fully in our worship.

RECEIVING COMMUNION. Holy Communion in the Episcopal Church is open to all who are comfortable participating in the Communion of the Lord’s Table. To receive communion come to the altar rail; kneel or stand with one hand cupped on top of the other hand to receive the consecrated bread. Please take the chalice and drink from it; or you may intinct the bread by dipping it in the consecrated wine. Parents are encouraged to determine when a child is ready to receive communion. All children are invited to the altar rail to receive communion or a blessing. Please feel comfortable doing what is best for you and your child.

THE FLOWERS ON THE ALTAR ARE GIVEN TO THE GREATER GLORY OF GOD AND IN LOVING MEMORY OF:  Herman Ansalvish by his wife Frannie

THE SANCTUARY CANDLE IS BURNING AS A CONTINUAL REMINDER OF CHRIST’S PRESENCE.

Food Donations:  You are reminded to bring your food items to church each week so that on the last Sunday of the month we can present them to the Lord for blessing and then give them to our food bank.  Whenever you go shopping, please add extra non-perishable items to your order for this parish outreach ministry.  Jesus never forgot the last, the lost and the least in his ministry and neither can we.

Free Community Breakfast:  In order to help coordinate the generous donations to our monthly free community breakfast, there is a sign-up sheet in the parish hall on which you can indicate what items you will donate.  This way we will know what needs to be bought.

The Altar Flowers are available for the weeks of October 3, 31. The Sanctuary Candles are available for the weeks of September 12, 19, 26; October 3, 10, 17, 31.

Mission and Ministry Plan:  One of the goals of our Mission and Ministry Plan is to increase the average Sunday attendance to 155 by the end of 2010.  That gives us less than 4 months.  The one way that has proven the most effective is a personal invitation by a current member to someone else.  A former member, an inactive family member, someone who is searching for a church, someone who has expressed dissatisfaction with their current church – all are people who would welcome a personal invitation from you to come and pray with us at Saint Paul’s.  We need everyone to commit to reach out and bring in at least two new active members.  We have been commissioned by Jesus Christ himself to do this.  Let’s just do it!

From Our Treasurer:  Due to the decrease in attendance over the last several weeks, if you were not in church, it would be appreciated if you would make up your weekly offering.  Thank you.

Support of Ugandan High School Students:  Over the last two years, the Outreach Ministry Committee has supported two high school students in Uganda born to parents with HIV / AIDS.  The intent is to give them an education in order to help them break out of the cycle of poverty and hopelessness that often accompanies these families.  The two students we have supported have graduated from high school.  One is going to a trade school for construction and the other is going to the university.

The Outreach Ministry Committee would like to support two more high school students; but they need your help.  The box on the table in the back of the church is now for contributions to help with high school tuition.  Each student’s tuition is about $350 a year.  Please put your spare change (or more) in the clear plastic box and help two more young people achieve their goals.

Lap Robes:  There are at present 7 members in St. John’s Lutheran Church’s sewing group.  All the baby quilts and lap robes are given away.  Each baby is given a quilt at baptism.  They have also given lap robes and baby quilts to:  The Linus Club which distributes them to hospitals; to children whose Dad’s are in the Service; and to the Columbia Pregnancy Group.  At Christmas they were given to the customers of “Meals on Wheels and the “Second Street Home” in Columbia. They are also given to older or sick church members.  They did not meet over the summer and will begin their regular Wednesday morning sewing meeting this month.  They would be happy to have anyone from St. Paul’s join in this mission.  Thanks.

Annual Ice Cream Social:  Today, Sunday, September 5 we will have our Annual Ice Cream Social following the 10:15 a.m. service.  We invite all who attend the Saturday 5:30 p.m. service or the Sunday 8:00 service to return and share some ice cream with all the toppings, and lemonade as we say “good-bye” to summer.

Choir Returns:  Our choir will return next Sunday, September 12 at the 10:15 a.m. service.  The first rehearsal is this Thursday, September 2 at 7:00 p.m. in the choir room.  We do need additional choir members – especially men – so if you are interested in sharing your talents to “make a joyful noise unto the Lord” just show up.  This is a great way to help enhance our prayer and worship.

Labor Day Eucharist:  Tomorrow, Monday, September 6 at 9:30 a.m. in the Holy Communion Chapel, we will come together as a parish family to praise and give thanks to God for all the talents and skills that God has given us that enable us to work and to be productive.  Everyone is invited to bring the “tools of their trade” and present them at the Offertory and have them blessed.  For example, if you are / were a bookkeeper – bring a calculator; a secretary – a keyboard or file folder; an engineer – a slide rule, etc.  If you are retired, then bring something that you used during your work career or something to represent your current hobby.  At the Offertory, each of us will bring our gift of tools to the altar, along with the gifts of bread and wine, and have them blessed and offered to God.  This is a great way to praise and thank our God for all the gifts and talents that have been given to us.

Holy Cross Day Joint Episcopal/Lutheran Eucharist:  On Tuesday, September 14 at 7:00 p.m. we will gather with our brothers and sisters of Saint John Lutheran Church and Saint James Lutheran Church at Saint James Lutheran Church for a joint Episcopal/Lutheran Eucharist in honor of Holy Cross Day.  Pastor Mark Kopp of Saint James will be the main celebrant and the Rev. Peter Bergstresser, Interim Pastor of Saint John Lutheran will preach.  Father Patrick will concelebrate.  A light reception will follow in the Saint James fellowship hall.  Please join us as we pray together on the day that commemorates the symbol of death that was transformed by Christ into the symbol of life.  Blessed crosses will be distributed during the service and you may bring your own cross to be blessed.

Vestry and Convention Delegate Nominations:  If you would like to be part of the leadership team of St. Paul’s, please consider becoming a candidate for vestry (need at least 4 candidates – each a three year term) and as a delegate (or alternate) – need at least two delegates and at least one alternate delegate candidate – to our annual Diocesan Convention.  Nomination forms are part of the August newsletter, and be obtained on our website (www.stpaulepchcolumbia.org) or from the parish office.  You may nominate yourself or someone else (they must also sign the form).  The nominations form contains the requirements and job responsibilities that these positions require.  All nominations are due no later than 12:00 noon on Thursday, September 16.  Elections will be held on Sunday, October 17 at the Annual Meeting of the Parish.

Annual Parish Homecoming and Open House:  This year our parish family will celebrate its Sixth Annual Homecoming and Open House on Sunday, September 19 with one service at 9:30 a.m.  All current and former members and clergy of the parish are invited to attend.  We will also send invitations to all the friends of the parish.  A reception will be held in the Mary Elizabeth Bair Parish Center following the service.  In conjunction with the Homecoming service and reception we will also have a Parish Open House.  We will invite the whole community to come and see what is happening at Saint Paul.  This will include members of the civic and religious leadership in our community.  In addition to self-guided tours of our church, chapel and parish center, the various committees, organizations, and ministries of the parish will have displays about their work with information that people can take with them.  Also, during the Homecoming service we will induct new members into the Legacy Society.  The Legacy Society is open to anyone who has indicated that they have remembered Saint Paul Episcopal Church in their will and / or other estate planning.  The members of this Legacy Society are vitally important to our parish and its future.  This is a perfect day to bring your family and friends to Saint Paul and let them see that we are a vital and active part of both God’s family and our community.  All are Welcome!

Sunday School Registration:  All children / grandchildren need to be formed in the faith.  Our Sunday School program helps parents and grandparents provide the best in Christian formation for our young people.  Please call the parish office (684-8496) to register your child / grandchild.  Pre-registration helps so that we know how much material to purchase and have ready for the classes.  Sunday School begins next Sunday, September 12 at 9:00 a.m. in the Mary Elizabeth Bair Parish Center.

Lectionary Bible Study:  Our weekly Lectionary Bible Study will resume on Wednesday, September 8 following our Wednesday morning Service of Eucharist and Healing.  The program focuses on the Lectionary readings for the coming Sunday and puts them in historical and biblical context.  This program begins at approximately 10:10.

Fall Resolutions:  As we begin our fall season, why not resolve to spend more time in prayer.  In addition to our Sunday services we have a Wednesday morning (9:30) Service of Eucharist and Healing in the Holy Communion Chapel.  We also have Morning Prayer every Tuesday morning at 8:00 a.m. and Evening Prayer every Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m.  Both Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer take place in the Holy Communion Chapel.  Resolve to talk more to God.

Commissioning of Ministry:  Next Sunday, September 12 we will commission those who participate in two very important types of ministry in our parish family: those who teach and those who assist with worship.  At all three services, we will commission our Sunday School and Nursery Director and Teachers and our Youth Minister.  We will also commission our Acolytes, Altar Guild, Ushers, Greeters, Prayer Leaders, Eucharistic Ministers/Visitors, Lectors, Choir, and Organist and Choir Director.  If you would like to be part of any of these ministries, please call Father Patrick.  Training will be provided and All Are Welcome!

Volunteer Needed:  Sunday School will begin next Sunday, September 12 and we are need of another teacher.  If you feel this is a ministry you would like to be involved in, please call Jenny Bair  (684-4946) or Ericka Sipe (892-3547).

Friendly’s Fund Raiser:  The Friendly’s Fund Raiser will take place on Wednesday, October 27, 2010.  Further details we be forthcoming in your bulletin and mailboxes or you may speak with Christine and Bill Weinberg.

Thank You:  Thank you for your cards, prayers, and other expressions of kindness over the past several months.  Alverta Hossler

Sympathy:  Our deepest sympathy to Tom Hartman on the death of his grandmother, Margaret Shadle.  Please keep Tom and his family in your prayers.

Nurse’s Notes:  Did you know that Medicare does not provide health coverage outside the US, but certain Medigap plans do offer partial coverage.  If you have a private health insurance plan, check to see what the policy includes for international travel.  You can purchase short-term health insurance from $20-$30; actual cost is based on age, gender, and any medical conditions.  For more information on travel-health insurance, contact a travel agent, or check the US Department of State’s website at:  http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis pa tw/cis/cis 1470.html
