Saint Paul Episcopal Church
"Together Building the Kingdom of God"

DECEMBER 3 & 4, 2011

WELCOME TO ST. PAUL'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH

WELCOME. In the name of Christ, we offer you welcome to this church. May those who sorrow find comfort; the weary, rest; the troubled, peace; the stranger, friends; the unhappy, joy; and to all, the sense of God’s presence in this Holy Place. If you are new to this parish community, please give your name and phone number to the Rector or sign our guest register on the stand in the back of the Church. As our honored guest, we want to welcome you.

THE SERVICE. There are two main books used for our service; the smaller red book is the Book of Common Prayer and the larger blue book is the Hymnal. There is also a Gray Hymnal. They can be found in the bookrack on the back of the pew in front of you. A Bible can be found at the ends of the pew. The page / hymn numbers in the service bulletin help you find your place in these service books. We invite you to participate fully in our worship.

RECEIVING COMMUNION. Holy Communion in the Episcopal Church is open to all who are comfortable participating in the Communion of the Lord’s Table. To receive communion come to the altar rail; kneel or stand with one hand cupped on top of the other hand to receive the consecrated bread. Please take the chalice and drink from it; or you may intinct the bread by dipping it in the consecrated wine. Parents are encouraged to determine when a child is ready to receive communion. All children are invited to the altar rail to receive communion or a blessing. Please feel comfortable doing what is best for you and your child.

THE SANCTUARY CANDLES ARE BURNING AS  CONTINUAL REMINDERS OF CHRIST’S PRESENCE.

Our Gifts of Bread and Wine:  We now have an additional opportunity to remember a loved one or to give thanks for God’s abundance.  This new opportunity will be to provide the bread and wine for our weekend services.  There will be two ways available.  The first is that you may, through a donation of $10.00, provide for the purchase of the bread and wine for Eucharist.  The other way is that you may provide the actual bread (recipe is available) and a standard bottle of wine (grape wine – red, white, or rose) or at least 18% alcohol.  Those who participate in this opportunity will be given the choice to bring up the bread and wine at the service they attend.

Sunday Lectionary Inserts:   The Lectionary inserts can be found on the table in the back of the church.  If you do not want to take it home, please return it to the table in the back of the church when leaving the service.  This is another way in which we continue to cut our expenses.

Food Donations:  You are reminded to bring your food items to church each week so that on the last Sunday of the month we can present them to the Lord for blessing and then give them to our food bank.  Whenever you go shopping, please add extra non-perishable items to your order for this parish outreach ministry.  Jesus never forgot the last, the lost and the least in his ministry and neither can we.

Free Community Breakfast:  In order to help coordinate the generous donations to our Free Community Breakfast, there is a sign-up sheet in the parish hall on which you can indicate what items you will donate.  This way we will know what needs to be bought.

Parish Twitter Account:  The parish now has a Twitter Account which can be used by members to share what is going on in the parish.  If you wish to have access to send out “Tweets,” please call the parish office (684-8496) and give us your name.  Parish Twitter Account:  Just go to Twitter and type in StPaulEpiscopa1 (it’s a 1, not an l) and tweet away.  You will need the password, which can be obtained by calling the parish office.  We ask that you not share this password with anyone outside the parish.  When you accept the password you accept the following “tweeting rules.”

1. Tweets must be about the parish, its activities, its mission and ministry, its programs, prayer life, its worship, its educational programs, etc.  You can include your opinion or reaction – positive or critical.

2.     No personal attacks.  If you are critical keep it to the program, activity, etc. and not the people involved.

3.     No political opinions or statements that could be read as an endorsement to any specific political party and / or candidate.

4.     Suggestions and / or ideas are always welcome.

5.     Remember – praise – when warranted – works wonders.

We hope that with Twitter we will have a few dozen people who will be willing to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ and the good news of Saint Paul Episcopal Church.  Together we can build the Kingdom of God.  If you have any questions, please contact Father Patrick.  We believe this will help us share with others all the great things going on in our parish family.  While many of us like bulletins and newsletters – the social networking technology that is available today must also be used.  The parish is also working to set-up a Facebook account – watch for details.

Advent Evensong:  On Wednesday, December 7, the parishes of the Western Rim of the Lancaster Convocation – Saint Luke (Mt. Joy), Saint Paul (Manheim), Hope (Mt. Hope), Saint John (Marietta), and Saint Paul (Columbia) will hold a joint service of Advent Evensong at Hope Episcopal Church in Mt. Hope.  We will begin with a light dinner at 6:00 p.m. in their parish house (across the street from the church) and then go across to the church at 7:00 p.m. for the service.  Take time during this busy season of preparing for Christmas to prepare your soul and heart by being part of this beautiful service of Scripture, song, and silence.  Come and bring a friend!  If you would like a ride, please call the parish office (684-8496).  This is designated as a combined Western Rim event and we all need to support our companion parish relationship as part of the Western Rim of the Lancaster Convocation.

-PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF DATE-

Annual Parish Christmas Pot-Luck Supper and Party:  Our Annual Parish Christmas Pot-Luck Supper and Party will be held on Saturday, December 17 (instead of December 10th) beginning at 5:00 P.M. in the Mary Elizabeth Bair Paris Center.  All members of the parish and their guests are invited to bring an entrιe, side dish, salad, or dessert to share.  The parish will provide the beverages.  There will be games (Now You Have It – Now You Don’t), prizes, and fun for all.  Santa will be coming for the children.  Sign-up sheets are on the stand in the back of the church and on the Sign-Up Board in the Mary Elizabeth Bair Parish Center.

Vestry Induction:  The following members of our parish family were elected to the Vestry at the Annual Parish Meeting that was held on Sunday, October 16, 2011:  Teresa Allen, Beth Runkle, Lester Kauffman, and Mary Angell were elected to a three-year term.  Pat Dancause was elected to a one-year term.  The full Vestry, including Margaret Baxter, Bob Brubaker, John Guilfoyle, Kim Kauffman, Suzanne Ollar, Margaret Witmer, and Tracy Witmer will be installed at the 10:15 a.m. service on Sunday, December 18.

Hanging Of The Greens:  On Sunday, December 18 at 12:00 noon we will have the “hanging of the greens.”  Please come and help us prepare.  Also the Altar Guild will decorate the altar. Many hands make the work go fast.  Father Patrick is treating to pizza for those who help.

Columbia Christmas Walk-A-Mile:  This year’s walk will take place on Monday, December 19 beginning at 7:00 p.m.  We will begin at Saint Peter Roman Catholic Church (121 Second Street).  Following scripture, song, and prayer, we will walk to The Saint Peter Apartments Lobby (corner of 4th and Union Streets), Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church (222 S. 5th Street), Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church (297 S. 5th Street), and Saint James Lutheran Church – ELCA (10th and Manor Streets).  We will have light refreshments at Saint James Lutheran.  At each stop there will be a scripture reading, a hymn, and a brief prayer.  Come and experience the wonderful Advent and Christmas traditions of each church.  This walk is open to all members of the community – so bring a friend.  Bring someone from outside of Columbia and let them see how we come together in prayer at this most sacred time.

Our Daily Bread:  The new Our Daily Bread for December, 2011 and January, February, 2012 are on the table in the back of the church.  Please pick one up as you leave today.

Nurse’s Notes:   Are you getting sick while you sleep?  Apologies if this news keeps you awake at night, but a recent study found that a typical pillow hosts more that 400,000 bacteria, yeast, and mold colonies.  Although they aren’t all harmful, some of the microorganisms can cause diarrhea, bronchitis, and asthma.  To reduce uncelcome bed buddies, toss your pillow in the washing machine twice a year.  And if you can’t even remember when you bought it, get a new one.

Christmas Bon Bon Sale:  Homemade Christmas Bon Bons are on sale now!  Cost:  $5.00 a dozen; $2.50 a half dozen.  Kinds:  peanut butter light; peanut butter krispy light; buttercream dark; coconut cream dark and cherry dark.  You can purchase them on Sundays between or after the services or any day Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Christmas Cookie Sale:  On December 10, 10:00 a.m. we will have a Christmas Cookie Sale.  We are asking volunteers to make batches of cookies (which can be frozen or made just prior to the cookie sale day).  The day of the sale all the cookies will be brought to the parish hall for sale.  There will be a set price per pound and customers can mix and match cookies, have them weighed, and have all the cookies they need for the holidays.  Another parish that has done this for a number of years makes over $3,000 each year with this fundraiser.  We ask your help and assistance with this fundraiser, which could provide a substantial level of support to the operating budget or our parish.

“Friendly Fun Night”  Our next Friendly Fun Night will be held on Wednesday, December 21 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Friendly Restaurant on Centerville Road.  Please come out and support this parish funraiser.  Saint Paul’s receives 10% of all sales that Friendly’s make between these hours.  See you there!

Toys For Tots:  For the 8th year, Saint Paul’s will participate in the Toys for Tots program.  Boxes have been placed in front of the pulpit.  Please bring your unwrapped new toys to the church  up until Sunday, December 4 and place them in the Toys for Tots boxes.  Last year we collected over 140 toys for children in the Columbia area.  Let’s make it even better for more children this year.

Angel Tree:  Once again this year we will participate in the Angel Tree Project.  The Angel Tree in the back of the church has angel tags on it with each tag having a need of the Columbia Clothing Bank – an outreach ministry of The Columbia Presbyterian Church.  Their needs are new socks and underwear for men and women and new blankets.  Please take as many tags as you can and then return the unwrapped items to under the tree no later than Sunday, January 1.

Christmas Flowers and Greens:  Envelopes for Christmas Flowers and Greens are in your bulletin.  Please return them to the parish office no later than Sunday, December 18th in order to have your names added to the Christmas flower list.
